We Dine Together

Tonight’s CBS Evening News wrapped up with a cool story from their “On The Road” series with Steve Hartman.  One high school student in Florida saw that eating alone at school is deadly to the soul, so he started a club for students to seek out those lonely solitaires and join them for lunch.  Wow!  Some of the kids interviewed were moved to tears.

I sensed this story was important to share here.  Hartman makes no mention of Jesus or serving God with this mission, and yet it resonates with Americans far and wide on a spiritual level.  I really hate for my Christian friends, so often caught up in concerns for trying to be “relevant”, to miss this.  So, I share it, yet I think this is a parody of my post on POWER LUNCHES just a few days ago.

Nevertheless, I hope you will look at it and consider how it serves Jesus.  I hope you see at least one aspect of what Fat Beggars School of Prophets is doing while you are moved to tears watching it.

This story hits a home run on being inclusive. The tears on the young lady’s eyes tells it all. This is even more powerful when people get the idea that God himself through Jesus wants to dine with you. The greatest aspect of this is when that happens, that day, Jesus makes his appearance through you.

I have a kid in high school here locally. I suggested looking into bringing a chapter of We Dine Together to our schools here in Lubbock too.

Meanwhile… FBSOP will be looking for souls in alleys and back lots, under bridges and No Loitering signs and invite them to the Lord’s Table.

      Thanx for your comment!

This is a simple, yet highly effective ‘passive’ ministry through our schools. One of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long time that attacks the problem directly. Again, this doesn’t require intelligentsia, but someone with empathy and one with a heart.

Absolutely beautiful! I am going to share this video with my son (Gabriel) who will be a freshman next year at a high school that looks remarkably similar to this one.

Yeah… I am hoping my kid will think seriously about bringing a chapter here too.
I was just talking to my kids yesterday, though, about my own experience – even as an adult- of eating at McDonalds (and other places) alone. It’s harder in public, for me anyway, but eating alone is just not God’s plan. Not for anyone. The whole idea, even, of drive through dining is not only hazardous to traffic but seriously demeans the experience of eating!
We make a practice of NOT disciplining our kids at dinner time. Before or after, but never during.
This is an issue for us all… Not just high school kids. But the high school kid is the one who sees it and takes the lead doing something about it.
      I will follow that!
